- This 81/z x 11 handset, handprint, handbound in purple cloth hardbound book was created in 1972 in a limited edition of 300 numbered copies. Ragnarok Press was co-owned and operated by Rochelle L. Holt and D. H. Stefanson when they were partners in Iowa City and Sioux City, Iowa; Holly Springs, Mississippi; and Alabama from 1970-1978. The rare treasure was recently discovered in a box in the attic of an old house before the press was sold to university of Alabama in Birmingham.
The 40 p. beautiful book includes an entry by Anais Nin titled "Desolation Trail" (page from Diary, Summer 1971) several years before appearing in her last Diary Vol. 7. Other contributors of merit are: Daisy Aldan (still living in NYC); Sharon Spencer.. author of Collage of Dreams: On the Writing of Anais Nin and the recent novel Dance of the Ariadnes (Sky Blue Press, 13149 Balfour, Huntington Woods, Mi 48070); the late James Hearst, friend of Robert Frost and Carl Sandburg; the late Ruth Lisa Schechter; William Cotter Murray and Bienvenido Santos (former fiction instructors at U of Iowa Writers Workshop); the poet David Allan Evans, still residing in South Dakota, etc. as well Rochelle who edited this first hardbound anthology, Valhalla 1, first issue of her magazine through 1979.
An antique now, Eidolons, with a woodcut by Stan Nelson, and varied lines from Walt Whitman's "Eidolons" opposite each entry, is worth twice the price offered to you who treasure the handmade book as a gift, a teaching tool for English and poetry classes, art and letterpress printing courses. From the Intro by D. H. Stefanson:
To Whitman, an eidolon is more than just an image; it is a continuing creative act that gives expression to each life and personality...
